Growing up with parents who had 5 children and adopted 8 more I witnessed how they lived charity. With such a large family we also became the recipients of the love, care, and kindness of others. These lessons have instilled in me a strong desire give back.

Why The Giving Cookie?
My mind was blown when I first met Katie and heard her story. Here she is, your average mom of 4 young kids who has a knack for baking amazing cookies. After learning of the lack of education available to girls in Africa she decides she wants to do something to help. Most people would maybe find a charity that helps build schools to donate to. Not Katie. She starts her own charity. She wants to completely fund and build a school herself. Sure, why not? Easy! WHAAAAAT?!?!
I was astounded as she explained the time she puts into baking and delivering gourmet cookies each month putting 100% of the profits towards her charity. Her goal was to raise $50,000 in 3 years, it had already been 2 and she was only half way there. “How are you going to raise the other $25,000 in half the time?” She explained her plan to increase cookie sales then take on another job and give all that money to the charity as well. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I had never met anyone who gave all their time and money towards a cause they deeply believed in. Some give a portion but she gives it all. When exactly would she sleep with this plan? Well, that night I was the one who couldn’t sleep. I had been to Africa with Thriving Nations. I saw first hand exactly what Katie was talking about. I wanted to help. I had always felt so blessed by my Thrive income and felt it was a gift straight from God, for some time I had the desire to give it back to God in some way but I wasn’t sure how.
My husband spoke up before I could. “I want to help Katie out with her charity, would you be ok donating some money?” I had already made my decision. I didn’t have to pray about, I knew it was right. “Hon, I want to give my entire Thrive income for the next year to help The Giving Cookie raise enough to build a school in Mali.” My amazing husband didn’t blink an eye. We told Katie what we wanted to do and the rest is history!
